Karelle Levy: Stitch and Bitch
Presentation and Reception with Karelle Levy
In conjunction with the exhibition, Hot Couture, JMOF-FIU presents this series to spotlight contemporary movers and shakers in the South Florida fashion scene, featuring diverse designers, fashionistas, and writers.
The first in this series will feature Karelle Levy, one of today’s most celebrated and innovative clothing designers in Miami. Founder of Krelwear, in 2004, her pieces breathe new life into the concept of knitwear, with rompers, hot pants, body-clinging dresses, tanks, sweaters and skirts. Karelle’s designs have a huge following, being worn by celebrities around the world such as Nicki Manaj, Rihanna and famed designer Patricia Fields. Karelle has also garnered many awards including Best Local Designer in the Miami New Times in 2005 and 2010. Her clothes can be seen in many publications such as The New York Times, Women’s Wear Daily, Ocean Drive and Lucky. Her pieces are one-of-a-kind creations, all made by hand in Miami. Karelle has always been influenced by the bright colors and energy of Miami, which can be seen through her designs, especially her line DiscGlo, which is made of UV reactive and glow-in-the-dark yarn. One of her other creative endeavors is her “Quickie Couture”, also known as “KREL 2 Go”, where she custom makes clothing on the spot. Karelle hosts a monthly knitting group called “Stitch and Bitch” in Miami Beach at the Freehand Hotel.
