To celebrate her 50th birthday, filmmaker Lynne Sachs gathers together other people, men and women who have lived through precisely the same years but come from places like Iran or Cuba or Australia or the Lower East Side, not Memphis, Tennessee where Sachs grew up. She invites 12 fellow New Yorkers -- born across several continents in the 1960s -- to spend a weekend with her making a movie.

Photographs included in the show span more than 50 years and four continents, from Gruber’s groundbreaking reportage of the Soviet Artic in the 1930s and iconic images of Jewish refugees on the ship Exodus 1947, to her later photographs of Ethiopian Jews in the midst of civil war in the 1980s.

Rescue: The Exodus of the Ethiopian Jews is the title of a book written in 1987 by Ruth Gruber, the subject of our current exhibition, which described the amazing operation to rescue the Ethiopian Jews. Tudor Parfitt's book on the same topic Operation Moses: The Untold Story of the Secret Exodus of the Falasha Jews from Ethiopia came out two years before.
