In celebration of the 11th annual Florida Jewish History Month, the Jewish Museum of Florida’s Founding Executive Director Marcia Jo Zerivitz will present a power-point lecture, based on extensive research for her newly released photo-documentary, Jews of Tampa. Through these vintage images, the fascinating people, places, and events that have shaped the history of the Jews of Tampa will be highlighted, along with their contributions to the development of the community.

The Italian opera Nabucco, by Verdi, captures the plight of the Jews’ exile from their homeland by the Babylonian King Nabucco (Nebuchadnezzar). This story represents the voices of all exiles. Members of the Florida Grand Opera will preview of Nabucco, followed by South Florida community leaders sharing their stories of exile and its effect on Miami’s diverse, yet connected, communities.

Dr. Erica Brown, Scholar-in-Residence for the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, directs the Jewish Leadership Institute. Dr. Brown is a faculty member of the Wexner Foundation, a Jerusalem Fellow, Avi Chai Foundation Fellow and 2009 recipient of the Covenant Award for her work in education. She lectures and writes widely on subjects of Jewish interest and leadership, including regular columns for the Jewish Telegraphic Agency and the New York Jewish Week and blogs for Psychology Today.

Rabbi Capers Funnye, spiritual leader of Beth Shalom B’nai Zaken Ethiopian Hebrew Congregation in Chicago, will present a talk on the subject of African American Jewry, followed by a panel discussion with leading scholars. Rabbi Funnye was born in South Carolina and his paternal relatives are from the Gullah community, which has retained much of its original African customs and language.
